Rockbridge Historical Society

One of the classes I took for my Mass Communications minor at Washington and Lee was “Principles of Public Relations” in fall 2017. One aspect of the class involved working in groups to support the public relations needs of local non-profits through the semester. I worked with the Rockbridge Historical Society on their web efforts during my time in the class.

I helped support the “Righteous and Rascals of Rockbridge” installation sponsored by RHS. The project documents famous and infamous figures who have called Rockbridge County home through brick pavers placed on the sidewalks of Lexington, Virginia, the seat of the county. I helped translate the spirit of the project onto the internet, building up the initiative’s website.

I used WordPress to design a site to explain the background of the project and serve as the home of a virtual tour of all the installed bricks. RHS provided copy and media that I placed on the different pages of the site. I created pages with a plug-in that displayed the stories behind all of the figures with pavers that sort alphabetically and street-by-street.

The website I built served as a virtual, mobile-friendly companion to the pavers that locals and visitors can interact with while walking through Lexington. This project gave me the chance to put my WordPress skills to good use, while interacting a client to ensure that the website benefited both the initiative and the Rockbridge Historical Society.
